Academy Education and Development Fund
by PROF DATO' KHALID ABDUL KADIR
Chairman, Fund-Raising Committee

After a long gestation period of 27 years, the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia have agreed to jointly build the Academies Building on the Joint Colleges Land next to the Istana Budaya and the National Library in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. We need the support of each and every member of the Academy of Medicine to make this project a reality.

The Joint Colleges Land was given to the College of Physicians, College of Surgeons and the College of General Practitioners in 1977 for the purpose of having a building that will support the educational and training activities of the three Colleges. Unfortunately, for many reasons, the three Colleges were not able to develop the land and building despite attempts to do so. With the merger of the College of Physicians and the College of Surgeons with the Academy of Medicine, and the College of General Practitioners registered as the Academy of Family Physicians, the task of developing the land now comes under two Academies, hence the name Academies of Medicine Building. The task was made easier when a portion of the land was acquired by the Government for expansion of the Tun Razak roundabout and the viaduct. The three Colleges were compensated about RM2 million. This sum is now being used to help develop the land and have our own Academies Building. The total cost of the   storey building is estimated to be about RM7 million without the internal furnishings, office equipment and educational/training equipment and fittings. The two Academies will need to raise about RM4 million within the next two years to make good the shortfall . We have agreed not to be burdened with bank borrowings as we will not generate enough to service the loan and still have enough funds for running costs of activities of the Academy.

The Academies Building will have a lecture theatre, conference facilities, space for clinical skills laboratory, an interactive computerised library, etc, on top of office space for the Secretariat of the Academies and the Colleges. There will also be office space for rent, lease, etc. It is estimated that once the building is fully utilised, there will be enough income generated to bear the costs of maintenance of the building as well as activities of both Academies.

The major problem now is to raise funds for the building. Both the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and Academy of Family Physicians will be working hard to get donations and have formed a joint fundraising committee for this purpose. We are hoping that every member of the Academy of Medicine will donate towards the Academy Education and Development Fund over the next two years. To encourage donations and to show our appreciation of the donations as well as to keep a record of donors for posterity, the Committee has come up with a special plan.

For every donation of RM1,000 or more, the donor will have his/her name recorded on a plaque in the Academies Building. The size of the donation will determine the plaque name size. Donors will be given receipts for income tax exemption by the Academy of Medicine which has a tax exemption status. Cheques should be issued in favour of “Academy of Medicine of Malaysia”.

To encourage donations, the Committee has decided to hold a fund-raising dinner on Saturday, 30 April 2005 at the Grand Ballroom , Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The main attraction of the dinner is that there will be very attractive lucky draws, the main prize being a brand new Mercedes Benz C180 Kompressor worth RM265,000. The second prize will be a Proton Gen-2,the third a Perodua Kelisa and the fourth a Perodua Kancil. There will also be many other smaller prizes including holiday packages. It will be RM1,000 per ticket or RM10,000 per table. The draw tickets are limited to 2000. Hence, the chance of winning the Mercedes Benz C180K is 1:2000 per ticket of RM1,000 and 1:500 chance of winning at least a car. The ticket for the dinner will be considered as a donation to the Academies Building and be recorded on the donors’ plaque. A person purchasing a table for RM10,000 will have a 1:200 chance of winning the Mercedes Benz or 1:50 chance of winning a car, and at the same time will have his or her name on a special plaque as a donor of RM10,000 and obtain tax exemption on top of that.

We hope all of you will rally to our call for donations for the Academies Building and attend the Academies Building Fund Dinner. We promise it will be a special night. We have invited Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah to the dinner where they will be conferred Honorary Fellowship of the Academy. We hope various organisations will also purchase tables at the dinner. To ensure it will be a success, we need members to help sell the dinner tables. Please contact the Academy Secretariat (Tel: 03 20930100, 20930200) for booking the tables or tickets, and for helping us to sell the tables. There will be prizes for the top three persons who bring in the most donations in terms of monetary value.

Apart from the above fund-raising dinner on 30 April 2005, the Committee will also be organising other fund-raising activities. The first will be a Charity Golf Competition on 13 March 2005 at the Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan A wa m , Jalan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. The fee will be RM250 per person and there will be great prizes to be won. If you are a golfer, please keep this weekend free and join in the fun.

The Fund-Raising Committee welcomes any ideas or proposals for raising funds for the Academies Building. We believe the Academies Building will not only be a symbol of academic excellence in standards of practice in Malaysia, but will become the venue where the Academies can have activities for continual professional development and medical education for doctors and specialists in Malaysia.

News from the College of Radiology
by DR EVELYN Ho
The 12th ASEAN Association of Radiology Congress "Latest Trends in Imaging"
17 - 19 September 2004

The ASEAN Association of Radiology Congress is a biennial meeting and member ASEAN countries take turns to host the congress. This year, the College of Radiology was the organiser and Malaysia – the host of the congress and theme was “Latest Trends in Imaging”. The congress was held at the Mutiara Beach Resort in Penang in September 2004.

YB Mr Lee Kah Choon, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Health Malaysia officiated at the Official Opening of the 12th ASEAN Association of Radiology (AAR) on the 17 September 2004. In his speech, YB Lee Kah Choon spoke on “Modern imaging: The Road to Better Healthcare”.

YB Mr Lee Kah Choon, Parliamentary Secretary,
Ministry of Health Malaysia

“The pool of radiologists, clinical oncologists, medical physicists and radiographers has expanded tremendously but were still short of Malaysia’s requirements despite numerous programmes being run to increase the numbers. The practice of imaging today has expanded with a lot of the district hospitals having imaging facilities besides those found in the general hospitals, severaluniversity hospitals and numerous well equipped private medical centers which closely rivals that of even some of the more developed countries.”

The Malaysian Vision of Health 2020 should result in Malaysians obtaining treatment at a lower cost at home, instead of travelling abroad.

Healthcare needs were dramatically increasing because of lifestyle changes and demographics. By 2020 in Malaysia, 6.6% of the population would be older than 65 years as compared to 2.3% today. Cancer would become more common. YB Mr Lee stressed that in no other disease is the early and accurate diagnosis with proper localisation of the disease extent more important than in cancer.

YB Lee Kah Choon urged the College of Radiology and the ASEAN Association of Radiology to take an active interest in ensuring research in these areas so that the nations of the region would benefit.

The 12th AAR began with a pre congress workshop featuring Updates in Ultrasound and was jam-packed with talks (beginning with breakfast talks at 7am and ending with evening symposia), interactive break up (“how I do it”) sessions and a trade exhibition made up of 22 international and local exhibitors. Probably the first in the region was the post congress workshop on 20 September 2004 – a leadership course for young radiologists who would be charting the course of Radiology in the future. About 200 radiologists and allied professionals came from the ASEAN countries as well as from Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan and Switzerland. Topics included were latest trends in imaging: Positron Emission Tomography-CT, Multislice CT, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology and MRI.

The Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon graced the luncheon on the 17 September 2004.

The official dinner was a Malaysian styled barbecue with dances from the State Tourist Development Corporation and a fashion show (showcasing Malaysian casual, beach and batik wear) organised and choreographed by Hideaki Lim – our own Malaysian cyber fashion designer.

The main congress ended in the late afternoon of 19 September 2004 with the closing remarks made by Dr P Sathyamoorthy, the Chairman of the Organising Committee AAR 2004.

A satellite AAR council meeting was also held. Official delegates from the ASEAN member countries met and a new council for 2004 – 2006 was elected. The new AAR Council President is Dr P Sathyamoorthy and the AAR Secretary is Dr Evelyn Ho. The next AAR Congress will be in Manila, Philippines, in January 2006.
