Message from the Master
Professor Dato' Dr Khalid Abdul Kadir
Master, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia

Academy Of Medicine After 50 Years Of Merdeka: Quo Vadis?

This year 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of Merdeka... and also the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Medicine on 19 July 1957 in Singapore. That Academy was the fore - runner of our Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. Thus in a sense, we should also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Academy this year. Singapore celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in a big way at the 41st Singapore - Malaysia Congress of Medicine on 19 July, the date of the first meeting of 34 doctors who founded the Academy. The Academy of Medicine of Malaysia was formed on 22 December 1966 in Kuala Lumpur, but in a sense it was a break away branch of the original Academy. Thus we should also be celebrating our 50th Anniversary.

The 7th Ministry of Health - Academy of Medicine Scientific Meeting perhaps should be viewed as an occasion for us to celebrate both the 50th anniversary of Merdeka and our Academy!

However, as in all landmarks of our lives, it is perhaps appropriate for us to reminisce and look at our past achievements and failures, and plan for a better 50 years. What have we achieved and where do we go from here?

We have been appointed as the custodian/managers of the National Specialist Register by the Ministry of Health, whilst waiting for the new Medical Act to be approved. We have been given funds to get it started, and appointed committees This is a very heavy responsibility, and I am very happy to see the various specialist subcommittees are working very diligently to determine the type, duration and standards of training needed for our future specialists. We still have a long way to go... we need to encourage more if not all specialists to be registered with the National Specialist Register. At the same time, we need to encourage more if not all specialists to join the Academy of Medicine. We have amended the Constitution to make it easier for the nation's specialists to join, by doing away with the requirement for publications. The Singapore Academy had done this seven years ago, and has become much stronger with more representation because of it.

We have had very good support from the gove rnment over the past 50 years, perhaps because many of the specialists were/are from the Ministry of Health or the Universities. With their support, we managed to get the Joint Colleges Land opposite the Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and the use of the present Academy of Medicine House behind the Parliament.

We have now started construction of the Academy Building at the Joint Colleges Land, with funds raised from the Fund Raising Dinner two years ago, and funds accumulated by the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia, as a result of the delineation of the land for the widening of the road at the Jalan Pahang roundabout. However the funds available are not enough... we are still short of RM2.0 million. May I appeal to all of you to please donate, perhaps as a gesture of celebrating our 50th anniversary, so that we can complete the building by Ma rch next year the latest. Please give generously, and encourage your friends to do the same. If each of the 2000 members were to donate RM1000, we should have enough. Your names will forever be on the walls of the Academy Building.

The Academy Of Medicine was founded with the objective of determining, maintaining and improving the high quality of specialist practice based on scientifically proven evidence based medicine, or commonly called western medicine. We are now being challenged by alternative medicines. The best way to prove to our patients that we are practising good medicine is to ensure we practice evidence based medicine. For this purpose, the Academy has worked hard with the Ministry of Health to provide clinical practice guidelines on various illnesses and medical conditions. We sincerely hope that our members will try to follow these guidelines and at the same time, be humane, have empathy and practise good professional bedside manners. Please uphold the good traditions of our medical practice.

Prof Dr Victor Lim Delivers the Keynote Address at the 30th Annual General and Scientific Meeting of the College of Radiology
Theme: "Imaging in Infectious Diseases"
2-3 JUNE 2007
By Dr Evelyn Ho

L to R: Victor Lim, Evelyn Ho, Augustine Ong Soon Hock

The 30th College of Radiology's Annual General and Scientific Meeting was not the usual run of the mill conference this year. Tan Sri Datuk Augustine Ong Soon Hock, PhD delivered the Inaugural biij (Biomedical Imaging & Intervention Journal) Lecture on "Phytonutrients from palm oil: From idea to market" and the keynote address on "The resurgence of infections and threats to the world" was delivered by Prof Dr Victor Lim, Dean of International Medical University and Deputy Master of the Academy of Medi cine, the umbrella body of the College of Radiology. In his keynote address, Victor Lim gave some rather basic information on pathogens, and reminded us that only 10% of the cells in or on our bodies were human, the rest being made up of bacteria! So it was indeed timely for this year's theme of the meeting to be Imaging in Infectious Diseases.

Officiating at the opening ceremony was Yang Berbahagia Dato' Dr Noorimi bt Hj Morad, Deputy Director of Health (Medical Division). She also opened the Trade Exhibition on 2 June 2007 and was taken on a tour of the booths. This year, for the first time as well, there was a booth for Rest & Relaxation with Nintendo Wii games to unwind and relax the mind after concentrating for the lectures. The meeting was held in Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur.

Professor Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President of the Malaysian Aids Council and also Head of the Infectious Disease Unit, Department of Medi cine in University Malaya spoke on the current status of AIDS and clinical perspective in Fever of Unknown Origin. Other local speakers were nuclear medi cine physicians - Dr Felix Sundram and Dr Lee Boon Nang and Interventional Radiologist, Dr Alex Tang.

The foreign faculty included Professor Dr Christian Herold, President of the 2007 European Congress of Radiology as well as Dr In-One Kim and Dr Jung Ah Choi from Korea and Dr Albert Low from Singapore.

The best oral paper was on "Multidetector CT of the liver and hepatic neoplasms: Effect of multiphase imaging on tumour detection, characterization and change in the management". The best e-poster was on "Development of a l ow-cost phantom for performance test evaluation of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)".
