WORLD PREMATURITY DAY 2017 AND PREMATURITY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

In conjunction with the World Prematurity Day 2017 and Prematurity Awareness campaign in the month of November which was observed worldwide, a joint effort by the University of Malaya, the Perinatal Society of Malaysia and the College of Paediatrics, Academy of Medicine Malaysia was made to raise awareness on this serious issue which affects 10% of all babies.

The Kuala Lumpur Tower for the first time in its history was lighted in glittering purple on the 17th and 18th of November 2017 (see picture). It will be followed by a "SuperPreemies' Run" on the 19th of November 2017, at the University of Malaya Arena (UM Arena) in honour and support of children who were born preterm. This charity run will be officiated by YTM Raja Dato' Eleena binti Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al Maghfur-lah, the patron of Perinatal Society of Malaysia. Over four hundred participants will attend the event, including children who were born premature.

The Kuala Lumpur International Neonatology Conference (KLINC) (http://www.klinc.org.my/) will be held from the 23rd to 25th of November 2017, with the aim to increase the knowledge and sharing of experience amongst healthcare providers, parents / families and experts from world-wide involved in caring for premature babies. KLINC 2017 is supported by distinguished speakers from the USA, UK, Australia, China and South Korea and will be officiated by the Minister of Health, YB Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam on the 23rd November 2017. The public and parents of preemies are therefore encouraged to join the hashtag campaign #Hugs4Preemies and #IamPreemie on twitter, instagram and facebook to promote continuing awareness of problems related to prematurity
